Centenary College Choir Makes Beautiful Music
Published Mar 07, 2008

The Centenary College Choir has earned the nickname of “America’s Singing Ambassadors.”

For more than 60 years, Centenary College has had a very vocal ambassador: the Centenary College Choir.

Founded in 1941, the choir has appeared around the world, including performances for various troop engagements, several presidents, European heads of state, national and international service club conventions, religious conferences and even a pair of appearances at Radio City Music Hall.

Founded by Dr. A.C. “Cheesy” Voran, the choir makes international tours every other year, and has covered 30 countries on five continents. Last year, the group made stops in Switzerland, Germany and France, continuing to earn its name as “America’s Singing Ambassadors.”

“Next year we’ll be going to Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales,” says Dr. Will Andress, the choir’s director and an adjunct professor of music at the college. “Plus we’ve also performed at the White House seven times during Christmas.”

With such varied audiences, it just makes sense that the choir’s repertoire would be broad as well. The 65-member group performs both sacred and secular music, classical and popular tunes, covering just about every style and movement of music imaginable. The group’s members are just as varied, but over time learn to work as a team, Andress says.

“The young men and women come from various parts of the country and often other nations,” he says. “And they represent most of the academic majors on campus. But with 30 or more concerts each year, and all the rehearsals and travel, they become really close. We really do mold them into a family.”
