Low Energy Costs Bolster Economic Development
Published Jun 27, 2008
As energy costs soar nationwide, businesses are taking a closer look here, where the supply is varied and relatively inexpensive.
“We have the lowest electric rates in the state, and we’re very proud of that,” says Arnie Frankel, manager of economic development for AEP Southwestern Electric Power Co.
About 85 percent of AEP’s generation is coal or lignite, followed by natural gas. This mix allows the company to keep rates competitive, a fact it markets in tandem with local and state economic development agencies.
Since 1986, the Dolet Hills Power Station in DeSoto Parish has been a major player in the area’s energy pool. Cleco Power and AEP-SWEPCO co-own the plant, which is the only one in the state fueled by lignite.
In addition to Cleco and AEP-SWEPCO, the region’s electric needs are served by Entergy Louisiana and Valley Electric Membership Corporation.
A plentiful supply of natural gas also bolsters economic development efforts. CenterPoint Energy serves more than 5 million customers in six states, including Louisiana, and also works to enhance the state’s business recruitment and retention efforts, says Eric Barkley, district manager.
“Lower energy costs contribute to a lower overall economic operating cost, which always is a key point when making a location decision,” Barkley says.
