Grambling Builds Tradition of Excellence

It is renowned for its famed Tiger Marching Band and legendary football coach Eddie Robinson, but Grambling State University is much more, a major educational asset and economic force in Northwest Louisiana.
Located on a 375-acre campus just outside Ruston in Lincoln Parish, Grambling was founded in 1901 by African-American farmers in rural north Louisiana who wanted to educate black children in the northern and western parts of the state.
Today, Grambling offers more than 800 courses and 64 degree programs in its five colleges (including an honors college), two professional schools, a graduate school and a Division of Continuing Education.
Its distance-learning program was the first in Louisiana to offer a bachelor’s degree. The university also operates two Mobile Automated Learning Labs (MALLs) that provide community and worksite access to individualized and computerized instruction and learning.
The university’s nursing, computer science and teacher education programs are among the many highly regarded offerings, and it is the only university in the nation to have a doctoral program in developmental education.
Enrollment stands at about 4,750 undergraduates and 400 graduate students who come from across the United States and 16 foreign nations. The university has a full-time faculty of 250 and employs nearly 800 people.
The Tiger Marching Band, known as “The Best in the Land,” was formed in 1926 and has become a household name, with appearances in the motion picture Drumline and on several television shows.
In 1999, the band was selected to represent the Pageantry of Bands section of the NCAA Hall of Fame.
Robinson coached Grambling to 408 wins in his 57-year career and developed numerous players who went on to the NFL.
