Caddo Magnet, Bienville School Earn National Honors

Caddo Parish Magnet High School was one of two area schools recently recognized by U.S. News & World Report.
When U.S. News & World Report analyzed thousands of schools to identify the best high schools of 2008, two Northwest Louisiana schools made the list.
Caddo Parish Magnet High School in Shreveport was awarded a silver medal by the national magazine, signifying the school’s ranking in the top 3 percent of high schools analyzed nationwide. Bienville High School in Bienville was awarded a bronze medal for its ranking in the top 6 percent.
“We are enormously proud of Magnet,” says Caddo Magnet High School Principal Mary Rounds.
With more than 1,100 enrolled and 22 percent minority enrollment, the magnet school earned recognition from the magazine based on how well it prepares students for college, students’ performance and higher-than-average performance among least-advantaged students.
“While there are fun things going on at the school, we are serious about the work that we do,” Rounds says. “In that all teachers are highly qualified, we are not averse to challenges. We look to continue to grow to meet the needs of our community of learners.”
At Bienville School, 90 percent of the 125 pre-kindergarten through 12th-grade students are classified as “at risk,” according to Principal Billy D. Rogers.
Rogers says 85 percent of Bienville School’s students graduate on time, compared to 69 percent statewide. About six students graduate each year, and of those, four typically go on to college and graduate from college.
“The faculty and staff here work together very well,” Rogers says. “They work together to determine what programs work best for our students.”
He says discipline problems are few at Bienville School, where students are enrolled at the elementary level and “grow up” with the faculty and staff.
“What I have said about Bienville School could be said about any school in the area,” Rogers says. “This area has large schools and small schools, all with good programs.”
