Maintaining Charm, One Brick at a Time
Published Apr 25, 2008
Northwest Louisiana has become a major draw for the retirement population, and places such as the fabulously historic Natchitoches are a key component of the allure. Natchitoches is the oldest permanent settlement in the Louisiana Purchase Territory, established in 1714. The focus on preservation of that longstanding character is evident here. In fact, the town was listed among the National Trust’s Dozen Distinctive Destinations for Historic Preservation in 2005. The charming downtown is chock full of interesting restaurants and shops, and the architecture throughout is stunning. Part of that character is the city’s brick-paved Front Street, which had the bricks placed in 1904. The street’s foundation and historic surface are now being carefully overhauled – brick by brick.
